Dean Michael J. Klag and Jonathan Samet, chair of Epidemiology, join Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon and other dignitaries following the Feb. 28 passage of a bill that bans smoking in city bars and restaurants. In testimony before the council, Bloomberg School faculty detailed the dangers of secondhand smoke. Samet, the senior scientific editor of the Surgeon General's 2006 report, and others later explained to state legislators how secondhand smoke exposure causes lung cancer, heart disease and other problems. The Maryland General Assembly approved a ban similar to Baltimore's. It will take effect in February 2008.
